Galaxy Cleanup Part 2

January 16th, 2013 by FRaNKy

After cleaning up the inside of the cabinet, it’s now part to start with the control panel – obviously the most seen and used part of the cabinet so it has to be in good order.  The old paint was  totally destroyed and the metal was starting to rust so some cleaning was in order.  With the assistance from the guys at the VoidWarranties Hackerspace in Antwerpen we started the action, first by sanding down the metal, removing as much dirt and old paint as possible.

Even the ancient “Player 1” and “Player 2” text came out to say hello.  Just for a bit as it was about to be painted over.

After 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of semi gloss car spray-paint the panel was ready for re-assembly.  The single button was replaced by a 3 in 1 combo button – this has needs the same hole as a standard euro button but gives you three for just a bit more real-estate on the panel – and we put back the player 1/2 buttons as the joystick – the stick got new microswitches of course.

Hooking up a multigame pcb for test on the freshly connected Jamma cable and Power supply we were in for a test.  All went fine from the first go – the simplicity of the control panel helped a bit.

Now its time to fit in the new LCD screen into the cabinet, in part 3.
